Shelter Upstate Journal
Shelter Upstate Journal
Notes on people and places of the Hudson Valley
and Catskill Mountains.
Styling: The Woodstock Retreat
In this new short term rental section of the journal we are featuring some of our favorite properties we have photographed that you can also spend a weekend in. Come with us on a tour and get a behind the scenes look at working with Shelter Upstate.
Chronogram: Anna Stockwell
Stockwell’s 1840 Colonial sits in the middle of Hurley. Despite its historic facade, it’s the ideal setting for contemporary gatherings. Her dinner party manifesto is simple: “Welcoming friends into your home and gathering around the table is really what’s special,” she explains. “Sharing food feeds more than just bellies. It’s what helps us stay connected, form new relationships and lasting bonds with our chosen families.”
Chronogram: The Octagon House
The artist Jesse Bransford on the porch of his octagonal home in Catskill, which he bought in 2013. The home sits in a grove of black walnut trees, adjacent to a tulip poplar that is as old as the house. “The property is completely sequestered in the midst of the village. Many people I meet don’t even know it’s here,” he says.
Real Estate: LakeSide A Frame
A freshly renovated and beautifully styled A frame in Catksill.
Chronogram: Colborn Bell
Colborn Bell’s home, the former Sacred Heart of Jesus church, sits on a hillside in the hamlet of Wilbur in Kingston. Built in 1884 to serve the local population of bluestone masons, carpenters, and shipyard workers, the church overlooks Feeney’s shipyard.
Around Town: Phoenicia
That nostalgic drive from out of the mountains back towards Kingston, stopping for a stroll through Phoenicia for a slice of pizza on the way.
Real Estate: Tinker Street Cottage
Part of my profession of photographing homes involves shooting homes for Real Estate. In this section of the journal I will share some of the homes I’ve had the pleasure or exploring and also the magical and charming quirks that make each home I photograph one I’ll carry with me forever.
Around Town: Woodstock
Revisiting an archive of images from local towns in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. Starting with my Home Town of Woodstock, NY.
Chronogram: Helen Toomer
The studio and artist's cabin of Stoneleaf Retreat are surrounded by 22 bucolic acres. Residency founders Helen Toomer and Eric Romano have gradually added art installations to the landscape.
